Getting Book Reviews

Don't forget book reviews! Most databases will allow you to select book reviews as a source type. Reason: find out a book's reputation, any hidden context, its significance among experts, and any problems with the book. Most authors are pretty persuasive and you need a second opinion.

Be sure to limit by document type check box

New York Times archives is a good option for nonacademic books published before 2006.

Your best bets for economics are:

Econlit, Business Source and JSTOR.

Be sure to limit results to "review" or "book review," depending on the interface. In Business Source Complete, you gotta click Show More types, and then choose doc types.

You can also use these databases:

InfoTrac Small Business Collection - focuses on less scholarly and practical titles - current management techniques and real world advice about business topics. You can search by book title or type your subject and then "book review."

Wilson OmniFile FullText. A good grabbag. You can limit it to search "book reviews" by a particular. discipline

These are not your only options but are some of the best. You can always check your favorite database to see if it has book reviews.

Finding Case Studies

The best databases for finding case studies are

ABI Inform

Limit under to case study under document type.

Emerald (do not click on the tab marked "case studies," instead do a keyword search for "case studies" and whatever you are researching. Emerald is management oriented.)

Business Source Ultimate.(limit under publication type to case study)

Whatever database you use, I recommend you also do a keyword search for case studies and your topic.

Impact Factor 2: Journals Ranked By Field

In an earlier post we talked about how to get the impact factor of individual journals.  Here’s how you find out the most influential journals by field.  Once you get into this section of citation analysis, you’ll intuitively see how to rank by most influential authors, institutions, conference proceedings and so on.  Have fun.

Go to an Thomson Reuters Citation Analysis database (different ones for different disciplines). Choose Journal Citation Reports at the top.

Sanborn Maps

Sanborn maps are a great way to study the historical layout of a town. Originally conceived as fire insurance maps, Sanborn Maps have proven to be of use to local historians, civic planners, real estate developers and sometimes small business people (just got a question that involved using Sanborn maps).

Sanborn maps cover the years 1867-1970 - and they do include small to middle sized towns, as well as large cities.

We have a Sanborn Maps Database.
